Charles Umlauf (American, 1911-1994) The Kiss, 1965 Bronze with green patina 8-3/4 inches (22.2 cm) high on a 1-1/4 inch (3.18 cm) high base Inscribed to male figures leg: S. UMLAUF PROVENANCE: Private collection, Round Rock, Texas. The present work is accompanied by a copy of the book The sculpture and drawing of Charles Umlauf by Gibson A. Danes (University of Texas Press, 1981) and is signed and inscribed by the artist on the title page. A VHS audio with an interview with the artist is also included with the present work. One of the premier sculptors in Texas in the second half of the 20th century, Charles Umlauf's sculptures range in style from realism and abstract expressionism to lyrical abstraction. Born in South Haven, Michigan, to German immigrant parents, he studied at the Chicago School of Sculpture and the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) under Albin Polasek. Umlauf moved to Austin, Texas, in 1941 with his family where he taught for 40 years in the new art department of the University of Texas, and received many accolades for his contribution to Texas art.
