Kawase Hasui (Japanese, 1883-1957) Preliminary Watercolor of Kyoto Gojo Bridge, circa 1930 Watercolor on paper 14-1/4 x 10-1/8 ines (36.2 x 25.7 cm) (sheet) Signed and titled: Hasui / Kyoto Gojobashi Greatly influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism initiated by the Western art world, the shin-hanga (new prints) movement started its burst amongst Japanese woodblock prints in the early Taisho period extending to Showa (early to mid 20th century), represented a revival and modernization of traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Watanabe Shozaburo, the leading Japanese printmaker and publisher at the time, exposed himself to contemporary Western paintings when he started his career in the print export business, then published the majority of the exquisite works of shin-hanga artists like Kawase Hasui, Ito Shinsui, Yoshida Hiroshi, and many others. As one of the most influential and celebrated artists in the shin-hanga (new prints) movement, Hasui was renowned for his depictions of serene and atmospheric Japanese landscapes, towns, and seasonal scenes. His prints are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail, subtle color gradations, and a profound sense of tranquility. His prints not only depicted well-known landmarks but also lesser-known rural areas, offering a comprehensive and poetic view of Japan. The evocative mood and technical excellence of his works resonated deeply with audiences, both in Japan and abroad, leading to their continued popularity and influence. This exquisite preliminary watercolor of Kyoto Gojo Bridge is a rare chance for collectors to see Hasui's masterful execution of colors in the creation of atmospheric landscapes. As evidenced in the delicate, translucent washes of watercolor seen here, Hasui creates a subtle interplay of light and shadow, emphasizing the tranquil water's reflection and the soft, overcast sky. Hasui's utilization of muted, harmonious colors enhances the peaceful atmosphere, while the detailed yet understated rendering of the bridge and distant buildings highlights his precision and attention to architectural elements. Hasui put the viewers on a boat, floating on the river, about to pass underneath the Gojo bridge of Kyoto, watching the pedestrians and merchants walking across, and this watercolor captures this exact slice of calm and serene time.
