Das vorliegende Gemälde geht auf eine Bilderfindung von Raphael (1483 – 1520) zurück und wurde im Kupferstich des Marcantonio Raimondi (1475 – 1534) verbreitet. Somit kämen sowohl Perin del Vaga, als auch einer von dessen Mitarbeitern in Frage. Der Maler zog alsbald nach Rom, wurde Schüler Raphaels und führte Malereien in den Loggien aus. In der Folge erhielt er Aufträge für Kirchen und Palazzi. Nach dem Sacco di Roma (1527) blieben römische Aufträge aus, und er begab sich nach Genua, wo er den Palazzo des Andrea Doria dekorieren durfte. Über Pisa zog er wieder nach Rom, wo sein letztes großes Werk, die Decke der Sala Regia im Vatikan, entstand.

Attribution to the named artist according to enclosed publication.

The present painting is based on a painting by Raphael (1483 – 1520) and was circulated in an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (1475 –1534). Thus, both Pierino del Vaga and one of his collaborators could be considered as potential artists.
