Das Gemälde schildert ein Begleitthema zur „Gefangennahme Christi“. Die nächtliche Szene des Verrats und der Gefangennahme am Ölberg ist hier lediglich in der oberen rechten Ecke gezeigt, mit der Darstellung des Judaskusses im Kreis der Jünger, die Gruppe von Fackeln beleuchtet. Hauptgegenstand ist dagegen die Flucht des Lieblingsjüngers Johannes, den hier ein geharnischter Römer zu ergreifen und festzuhalten versucht. Die Darstellung bezieht sich auf die Stelle des Markusevangeliums, wonach Johannes flieht, nur mit einem Umhang bekleidet, den ihm ein Römer zu entreißen sucht.

Provenienz:
Das Gemälde trat 2003 im Kunsthandel auf und wurde von Elisabetta Fadda und Nicolas Turner als ein verschollenes Werk Correggios vermutet.

Anmerkung:
Die nächtliche Darstellung ist möglicherweise in Zusammenhang mit Correggios „Jesus am Ölberg“ zu sehen, das sich im Apsley Hous London befindet, in vergleichbarer Farbpalette. Die Kopie des Gemäldes befindet sich in den Sammlungen der Alten Pinakothek München, (Leinwand, 35,6 x 26,8 cm, Inv.Nr. 6506, ehemals Schlossgalerie Aschaffenburg). Im 17. Jahrhundert finden wir diese seltene ikonografische Darstellung in drei gemalten Versionen in bedeutenden Sammlungen: in der des Cardinals Sforza, Barberini, und eine von Pietro da Cortona (Galleria Nazionale di Parma, sowie erwähnt in dem Werk von Gerolamo Galimberti von 1569, als nach Correggio). Ein vergleichbares Gemälde „Johannes flieht vor der Verhaftung Christi“, Öl auf Leinwand, aus der Zeit um 1522, befindet sich in der Galleria Nazionale di Parma und ist eine Kopie, wahrscheinlich eines emilianischen Künstlers, nach einem verlorenen Original von Correggio.

Provenance:
The painting appeared on the art market in 2003 and was considered by Elisabetta Fadda and Nicholas Turner to be a lost work by Correggio.

Notes:
The nocturnal composition may be considered in relation to Correggio’s “The Agony in the Garden”, now in Apsley House, London, which features a comparable palette. A copy of that painting is held in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich (oil on canvas, 35.6 x 26.8 cm, inv. no. 6506; formerly Schlossgalerie Aschaffenburg). By the mid-17th century, three painted versions of this rare iconographic subject were recorded in important Roman collections: one in the collection of Cardinal Sforza, another in the Barberini Collection, and a third in the possession of Pietro da Cortona. An earlier reference occurs in the 1569 inventory of the collection of Girolamo Garimberti, where a small painting of the subject is described as a copy after Correggio. A comparable painting, “Saint John Fleeing from the Arrest of Christ”, dating from ca. 1522, is held in the Galleria Nazionale di Parma. Executed in oil on canvas, it is considered to be a copy, probably by an Emilian artist, after a lost original by Correggio.
