A Mengen War Shield New Britain, c. 19th century or earlier Wood with black and white natural pigments, traces of red, reddish plaited vegetal fibers strung diagonally across the center of the front and at both ends. The low relief carved and painted designs represent two highly stylized opposing human faces surrounded by a frame of serrated designs. Concentric circles and bold fields of black and white trace the facial features. Two wood spear tips are embedded in the front. The back has a carved out wood grip, and a sun-like symbol of concentric circles and rayed triangles on perimeter. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and mediums. Three other holes and other scars on the front, possibly from other spears hitting it. Cracks mainly on the bottom. This is a particularly old and authentic war shield from New Britain.
