Wolf Kahn (American, 1927-2020) Evening Near Small Point, 1992 Oil on canvas 44 x 52 inches (111.8 x 132.1 cm) Signed lower center: W Kahn Signed, titled, and inscribed on stretcher: W Kahn / #16-1992 Evening Near Small Point PROVENANCE: Ameringer Yohe Fine Art, New York; Marianne Friedland Gallery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Private collection, probably acquired from the above, by 1994. This work will be included in the Wolf Kahn Foundation's Catalogue Raisonné Project of the artist's work and is accompanied by a letter of acceptance issued by the Wolf Kahn Foundation. Evening Near Small Point exemplifies Wolf Kahn's distinctive synthesis of observed landscape and painterly abstraction. This composition is divided into broad horizontal bands—a luminous expanse of magenta sky, a narrow strip of yellow light at the horizon, and the cool, reflective surface of water below is interrupted only by the dark silhouette of a distant peninsula. This approach reflects Kahn's lifelong exploration of color. He explained, "I am always trying to get to a danger point in color," where hues risk becoming "too sweet or too harsh," yet still retain a sense of strength and coherence (as quoted in D. Ashton, Wolf Kahn: Landscapes, San Diego, California, 1983, n.p.). In the present work, that tension is palpable—the saturated pink sky presses against the cooler tones of the water, the strike of yellow that bands across the horizon creates a charged visual contrast, like lighting piercing through center. Kahn allows the image to dissolve into what he referred to as, "a field of texture," choosing to portray a sense of atmosphere over topography, inviting the viewer to experience the landscape as a shifting, sensory field (as quoted in W.C. Agee, Wolf Kahn: Paintings and Pastels 2010-2020, New York, 2020). The hurried brushwork exhibited in Evening Near Small Point is a collection of crosshatched strokes which lift off the flat plane of canvas, echoing the rush of ocean tides and swift moving clouds across the sky. The familiar coastal geography of Maine is transformed into an arena for chromatic, gestural experimentation.
