Chuck Close annotated and hand-gridded this gelatin silver print photograph of his sculptor and friend, Keith Hollingworth (b. 1937). Hollingworth was featured in several groundbreaking works by Close throughout his career, including the 1970 large-scale acrylic painting in various shades of gray, Keith. The present work served as a preparatory step for Close's 1972 large-scale mezzotint, Keith. Utilizing black-and-white photographs, Close broke up the image into smaller, more digestible, abstract sections through a method called "squaring." Close became well known for his "grid method," in which he created large-scale photorealistic portraits built up from patterns within a series of small squares. Presents very well. Overall condition along edges of work, adhesive residue, artists fingerprints, stray pigment and marks, inherent to artists working process. Bumps to corners with visible creases. Very faint, roughly 4 in, scratch to upper right, visible under raking light. A few scattered stray pin points of ink. Floated and framed under acrylic.
