Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) Untitled (Woman), 1965 Oil on textured paper 19-1/2 x 11 inches (49.5 x 27.9 cm) (sheet) Signed, dated, and inscribed at lower left: To Barron / From , / Bill de Kooning / May 15, 1965 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Miami, Florida. Created in 1965, Untitled (Woman) belongs to one of the most important and enduring subjects of Willem de Kooning's career: the female figure. Here, however, the aggressive energy of his celebrated Women of the early 1950s has given way to something looser, more fluid, and sensual. After moving to East Hampton, de Kooning increasingly allowed figure and landscape to merge, using sweeping lines and fluid passages of paint to suggest the body rather than define it. Painted on textured paper, this intimate work captures what made de Kooning so important to postwar American art—his remarkable ability to move freely between abstraction and figuration, never allowing one to completely overtake the other.
