Nelson Stevens (1938-2022) Untitled, 1972 Acrylic on board 22-1/2 x 20 inches (57.1 x 50.8 cm) Signed and dated lower center: N.STEVENS-72 PROVENANCE: The artist; Marshall Murray Chanzit, Belle Meade, New Jersey, acquired from the above, circa 1972-74; By descent to the present owner, Batavia, Illinois. Nelson Stevens, a pivotal figure in the Black Arts Movement, developed a powerful and distinctive style in his early 1970s works that combined bold color, rhythmic forms, and expressive symbolism. His art from this period is celebrated for capturing the vibrancy, strength, and resilience of Black identity and culture, emphasizing a visual language that merges abstraction with figuration.
