The sitters are the sugar manufacturer Karl vom Rath and his wife Elisabeth, who were portrayed on the spacious terrace of their villa at Kurfürstenallee 9 in Bad Godesberg. Hugo Mühlig and Adolf Lins had a close friendship. Based in Düsseldorf, they travelled the Rhineland together, worked on similar motifs and also painted together.
