Since the 1960s, the work of A.R. Penck has centred upon an independently developed system of signs composed of reduced figures, symbols and linear structures. The artist understood his visual language as a universally legible system mediating between painting, drawing and writing. His works have been shown internationally in major exhibitions, including several editions of the documenta, as well as in numerous museum presentations across Europe and the United States.
The painting Störung (Disturbance) from 2005 presents a densely structured, sign-like composition set against a light background. Executed in vivid red and deep black, stylised figures, geometric forms and linear elements are distributed across the entire pictorial surface. The figures appear highly simplified, with schematic bodies and distinctive contour lines. Closely interwoven, the individual figures follow a clearly structured arrangement that does not appear accidental, but instead adheres to a self-contained pictorial logic. The colour palette is reduced to the striking contrast of red and black, allowing the individual forms to stand out distinctly and remain clearly differentiated from one another. The composition is characteristic of Penck’s visual language, which is founded upon reduction, repetition and systematic order.
The composition dispenses with any sense of spatial depth; instead, the elements are placed densely across the picture plane. The signs exist in immediate proximity to one another and partially overlap, without establishing a hierarchical order. The title Störung (Disturbance) suggests an interruption or irritation within the dense pictorial structure. The surface appears deliberately condensed, with repetitions and intersections of lines creating a field of visual tension.
Within Penck’s oeuvre, this work belongs to a later phase in which he continued to develop his characteristic system of signs with consistency. The combination of reduced formal language and clear colouration remains central. The dense arrangement of signs and the flattened composition are typical of works from this period and point to the continual refinement of his visual language
