Ralph Morgan (American, 1927-2017) Presidential Nominee Norman Thomas (Socialist Candidate), "Egged Out", Newark, NJ, June 4, 1938 Gelatin silver print 19-3/4 x 15-3/4 inches (50.2 x 40.0 cm) (image/sheet) Titled, dated and with photographer's Colorado studio copyright and date stamp verso. American dissenter and socialist Norman Thomas was a largely reviled figure in American politics, despite being nominated for the US Presidency six times. Thomas was a forceful crusader for social and economic justice, supporting workers' strikes, while fighting racism, police brutality, fascism and founding the Keep America Out of War Committee. Often banned from public platforms, Norman was at various times egged, teargassed and even kidnapped and deported when he tried to make his views known publicly. No outcry was as fierce as the one Thomas received in Jersey City on June 4, 1938. He had barely uttered a few words when a mob stormed the venue, volleying a hail of eggs and vegetables at Thomas. Freelance photographer Ralph Morgan captured the attack with the resulting image distributed widely.
