Ernest Knee (American, 1907-1982) "The Spruce Goose", Long Beach, California, 1946-1947 Two gelatin silver prints Each 8-1/8 x 10-1/2 inches (20.7 x 26.7 cm) or the reverse (image) Each 9-1/8 x 11 inches or the reverse (sheet) Each signed in pencil, verso. The "Spruce Goose," officially the Hughes H-4 Hercules, was a massive flying boat designed and built by Howard Hughes during World War II. Despite its nickname, it was primarily constructed from birch wood due to wartime metal restrictions, not spruce. The aircraft, which was intended for military transport, only flew once, for a short duration, on November 2, 1947 and is now on display at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. Each a neutral toned print on ferrotyped, mid-weight paper with narrow margins. Some typical ferrotyping irregularities across surface but each in very good/excellent condition overall. Sold matted and unframed.
