Vivian Maier (American, 1926-2009) Digging for Gold, circa 1950s Gelatin silver print 8-1/2 x 8 inches (21.6 x 20.3 cm) (image) 10 x 8 inches (sheet) From the Ron Slattery collection Vivian Maier self printed only a handful of works herself during her active years in the 50s and 60s, this print which we have titled Digging for Gold is one of that handful. This print is a great example of Maier's experimentation with tonality and light, while she never perfected the process of developing photographs, she still kept her attempts. With the many images Maier took of children over the years, many of whom she nannied, this particular photograph may have been chosen for printing due to its lighthearted and comedic quality.
