Antonio Gattorno (1904-1980) Three Fish, 1946 Oil on canvas 18 x 25 inches (45.7 x 63.5 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Gattorno 46 PROVENANCE: The artist; His wife, Isabel Gattorno, inherited from the above, 1980; Private collection, acquired from the above, 1982. Three Fish (1946) by Cuban painter Antonio Gattorno is an important work that reflects both his connection to Cuban identity and his evolution within the modernist movement. Together, fish and eggs in Gattorno's work can be seen as representations of life's full cycle, from birth and potential (egg) to sustenance and resilience (fish). These symbols capture both individual and cultural resilience, as Gattorno used his art to navigate the themes of identity, survival, and renewal, drawing from personal, cultural, and universal wellsprings of meaning. Through these recurring motifs, Gattorno's work invites viewers to consider the nature of life, growth, and the enduring strength within cultural heritage.
