Signed lower left: Curt Walters
Scottsdale Art Auction, Scottsdale, Arizona, March 31, 2007, lot 237; Private collection, Houston, Texas.
Curt Walters (American, b. 1950) Afternoon Near Hopi Point, The Grand Canyon Oil on canvas 48 x 40 inches (121.9 x 101.6 cm) Signed lower left: Curt Walters Titled on the stretcher: "Afternoon Near Hopi Point" PROVENANCE: Scottsdale Art Auction, Scottsdale, Arizona, March 31, 2007, lot 237; Private collection, Houston, Texas. Curt Walters, born in 1950 in New Mexico, is celebrated for his vibrant and detailed depictions of the Grand Canyon. Growing up near the mesas of the Southwest, Walters was deeply influenced by the natural beauty around him from a young age, which ultimately shaped his artistic vision. He began his career as a painter in the early 1970s and quickly gained recognition for his ability to capture the vast, majestic landscapes of the American West. Over time, Walters became particularly known for his paintings of the Grand Canyon, celebrated for their meticulous attention to light, atmosphere, and geological intricacies. Afternoon Near Hopi Point is a large-scale painting that captures the sheer splendor of the Grand Canyon. Known for spending hours observing and sketching the canyon from different vantage points, Walters often includes minute details such as individual rocks, trees, and even subtle textures of the canyon walls in order to ensure that his representations are as true to life as possible. From a high vantage point, the scene reveals sweeping cliffs and plateaus illuminated by warm sunlight, contrasting with cool shadows. The naturalistic color palette, dominated by earthy tones, transitions into softer hues in the distance, create atmospheric depth, while the interplay of light and shadow among the sun-kissed walls evokes a sense of timeless beauty. Walters' fascination with The Grand Canyon began early in his career, and over the years, he has returned to this subject repeatedly, creating a vast body of work centered around the canyon's awe-inspiring vistas. His ability to capture the varying moods and seasons of the canyon sets him apart from many other landscape artists. Whether it's the soft, golden light of dawn, the dramatic shadows of a setting sun, or the vivid colors of autumn leaves against the red rock cliffs, Walters' paintings reveal The Grand Canyon in all its majesty and complexity. These glorious vistas are not only a testament to his talent, but a statement in his commitment to raising awareness about environmental conservation and protecting the land that has inspired him and given him the name as one of the most brilliant canyon painters of the American West.
