Signed lower left: Dan Blagg
Private collection, Fort Worth.
Daniel Blagg (American, b. 1951) Sand Bar, 1974 Watercolor on paper 28-1/2 x 20-1/2 inches (72.4 x 52.1 cm) (sight) Signed lower left: Dan Blagg Signed, dated, and titled on backing paper: "Sand Bar" 1974 / Daniel Blagg / Watercolor PROVENANCE: Private collection, Fort Worth. A central figure in Fort Worth's contemporary art scene, Daniel Blagg has spent over forty years exploring the intersection of realism and decay in the urban landscapes around him. Working primarily from his studio on Fort Worth's industrial edge, Blagg finds beauty in the overlooked: deserted roads, derelict buildings, and remnants of discarded Americana. His meticulous attention to detail, combined with a stark, often haunting portrayal of these settings, turns neglected sites and objects into powerful reflections on the land and culture of Texas. In addition to his oil paintings, Blagg's watercolors bring a compelling softness to his harsh subject matter, creating atmospheric portrayals of scenes that feel both familiar and strangely distant. The subtle washes of color and shadows in works like his watercolor Sand Bar, 1976 evoke a quiet, almost meditative quality. His art challenges viewers to confront the aftermath of modernity, as well as what we have lost in the natural world—what we build, forsake, and forget. Over the years, Blagg's work has been widely exhibited and collected by prominent institutions such as the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Museum of South Texas, solidifying his place as a significant voice in contemporary Texas art.
