Giovanni Battista Rossi (Italian, 1730-1782) The Sacrifice of Noah Oil on canvas 32 x 49-1/4 inches (81.3 x 125.1 cm) PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, New York, October 6, 1995, lot 126; Private collection; Sotheby's, New York, May 26, 2005, lot 34; Private collection, Chicago, Illinois, acquired from the above. LITERATURE: N. Spinosa, Pittura Napoletana del Settecento: dal rococò al classicismo, Naples, Italy, 1987, pp. 112, 252, no. 118, illustrated (smaller study). Spinosa's text refers to a smaller painting of the same composition, and suggests that it is a study for a larger, finished example, which may in fact be the present work. Wax lined canvas. Mild frame abrasion at edges. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure. Scattered minor surface abrasions and faint hairline scratches. A few scattered small dots of loss, apparently stabilized beneath the varnish layer. Mild surface dirt and dust. Not examined out of frame due to size. Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Brushy retouching at edges. Brushy strengthening applied to the architecture at upper center. Raised arms of the leftmost standing figure have been overpainted. Extensive but finely applied retouching throughout, primarily appearing to address craquelure. Framed Dimensions 42.5 X 59.25 X 3.5 Inches
