A Russian Porcelain Covered Sauce Tureen from the Gothic Service Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, Period of Nicholas I (1825-1855), circa 1832-34 5-1/2 x 7-3/4 x 7 inches (14.0 x 19.7 x 17.8 cm) PROVENANCE: The Thomas Mansfield Collection of Imperial Russian Porcelain; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington; The Kathleen Durdin Collection of Russian Decorative Arts, Tampa, Florida. The small banqueting service in the Gothic style was commissioned by Emperor Nicholas I for the dining room of the "Cottage" Palace at Peterhof. The Cottage had been designed in the Gothic revival taste by Scottish architect Adam Menelaws, and in the 1840s, a new adjoining dining room was added by the court architect Stackenschneider, and the service created "for the August Family's banqueting table".
