Ilse Bing (German/American, 1899-1998) Greta Garbo Poster, 1932 Gelatin silver print, printed 1991 10-1/8 x 13-3/8 inches (25.7 x 34.0 cm) (image) 11 x 14 inches (sheet) Signed and dated in ink in the image. Signed and dated in pencil, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, circa 1997. A 16 x 20 inch large format of this print greets me every morning when I wake. Greta was such an important film icon, but in this is already expressing how totally fleeting that cinematic fame is on this planet. The poster advertising the film "Grand Hotel" produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer and starring Greta Garbo, and clearly distributed in France, was a global hit. Ilse's visual wit and instinct puts even a big star like Garbo in her place and in her time. Everything fades. In 1932 Garbo was 27, having been born in 1905, and Ilse was 33, having been born in 1899. Both of them were at the peaks of their career trajectories.
