Antanas Sutkus (Lithuanian, b. 1939) Jean-Paul Sartre in Lithuania, Mida, 1965 Gelatin silver print, printed later 15-7/8 x 19-1/2 inches (40.3 x 49.5 cm) (image/sheet) Signed, titled, and dated in pencil, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, 1997. Jean-Paul Sartre was a literary hero of mine. After one of my successful exhibitions in Cologne at the In Focus Gallery, it came time to get paid for my sales, I suggested to the dealer, Burkhard Arnold, that part of my payment could be in that print, and he was totally open to the idea. It was such an incredibly dramatic photograph of the existentialist writer of Nausea, Being and Nothingness, No Exit.
