拍品信息
Charles Addams (American, 1912-1988) Golfer, The New Yorker magazine cover, May 23, 1988 Watercolor on paper 22-1/8 x 17 inches (56.2 x 43.2 cm) (sheet) Signed lower right: Charles Addams In the 100 years since The New Yorker first appeared in 1925—bringing to life Harold Ross and Jane Grant's vision of a magazine that would be "a reflection in word and picture of the metropolitan life"—the publication has become home to some of the most notable authors and artists of their time. Unquestionably, one of the most significant careers to emerge from the magazine is that of Charles Addams. Addams was one of The New Yorker's major breakout stars, debuting in its pages in 1932 and introducing the world to his iconically spooky creation, The Addams Family, in 1938. By the time of his death in 1988, Addams had created over 1,100 interior cartoons and 60 covers for The New Yorker. Golfer, which appeared on the cover of the May 23, 1988 issue, would be the last to run in his lifetime. At first glance, the viewer is drawn into the scene by a soft watercolor wash of early morning. Then come the unmistakable touches of Addams's uncanny sensibility: the smiling golfer is gazing at an ethereal helping hand emerging from a water hazard to offer up a rescued ball—even as he holds his club in a way that suggests it's doomed to land right back in the drink. The disembodied hand, seemingly acting of its own accord, recalls the Addams Family's Thing, while also offering a subtle nod to the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend. Sophisticated wit and gentle absurdity are classic hallmarks of a great New Yorker cover—and Golfer delivers on both. The present work is accompanied by a May 23, 1988 magazine tear sheet.
