Enrico Caruso (Italian, 1873-1921) Self portrait, 1916 Ink on paper 5-1/8 x 3-3/8 inches (13.0 x 8.6 cm) (sheet) Signed, dated, and inscribed lower right: Enrico Caruso / N.Y. 1916 Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Brigandi Coins and Collectibles, New York; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 2015. Enrico Caruso was best known for his remarkable tenor voice and his love for tobacco, fine food, and general luxury, but he also harbored a passion for drawing, particularly quick, cheeky caricatures of himself and others. Given his larger-than-life persona and decadent lifestyle, the appeal of the cartoonish style is clear, and the resulting drawings, like the self-portrait offered here, reflect their maker's levity and sense of humor. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Brigandi Coins & Collectibles, dated April 23, 2015, an author-signed copy of Francis Robinson's Caruso: His Life in Pictures, a copy of Michael Scott's The Great Caruso: A Biography, and an LP record of "Caruso: Immortal Performances, 1904-1906."
