Kiichi Asano (Japanese, 1914-1993) A Rainy Commencement Ceremony, Gion Quarter, Kyoto, January 1953 Gelatin silver print, printed November 2005. Signed, titled, dated and editioned '59/100' in Japanese in ink, verso. image: 12-3/4 x 17-1/2 inches (32.4 x 44.5 cm) sheet: 16 x 20 inches PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the Estate of Kiichi Asano. LITERATURE: K. Asano, The Gion Quarter, Self Published, 1990, cover. Asano spent a number of years photographing the Gion, Kyoto's Geisha district, but he gained greater access to the secret lives of its inhabitants, particularly the Maiko girls (apprentice geishas, only found in Kyoto and pictured here), when the BBC commissioned him to make stills shots of the quarter for one of its projects. Neutral toned print on semi-gloss, double-weight paper with margins. Asano's stunning image, rarely offered at auction, and the cover of his book on the Gion Quarter of Kyoto, in excellent condition. Sold unmatted and unframed.
