Ansel Adams (American, 1902-1984) Carolyn Anspacher, San Francisco, c. 1932 Gelatin silver print, printed 1970s 12-3/4 x 9-5/8 inches (32.4 x 24.5 cm) (image/sheet) Titled and dated in ink, and with the photographer's studio stamp and affixed Weslyan University Fine Art Department collection label, mount verso. PROVENANCE: Henry Buhl Collection; Private collection. Carolyn Anspacher was an award-winning journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle from 1933 until her death in 1979. During her career, she covered many major stories, including the murder trial of Angela Davis, and the kidnapping and trial of Patty Hearst. Anspacher long friend of Virginia and Ansel Adams; in about 1932, Adams took this portrait of her that was called "The Great Stone Face" by some. Neutral toned print on semi-gloss paper, trimmed to edges and mounted on board. Edge chipping, lower edge towards left corner; minor soiling, right edge, mount, none affecting the image significantly. Linen tape remains from earlier framing (?) affixed on each side of mount verso, not affecting the image. In very good condition overall. Sold matted and unframed. 18 x 14 inches (mount)
