Eikoh Hosoe (Japanese, 1933-2024) Ordeal by Roses #5 (Yukio Mishima with Hammer), 1962 Gelatin silver print, printed later 14-1/4 x 10-1/8 inches (36.2 x 25.7 cm) (image) 15-5/8 x 11-3/4 inches (sheet) Signed in pencil, lower margin recto. Signed, titled, and dated, in pencil, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above. When I was studying with Nathan Lyons in Rochester, NY in 1974, I reached out to Eikoh Hosoe and we met on several occasions when he would come to New York City to see his gallery or to teach a workshop. Those images of Mishima greatly influenced my ongoing work with Minami Azu, with the working title, 2muse. Eventually when I did his portrait in Tokyo in 1989, he had been a friend and colleague of long duration. He was the ultimate master of Japanese photography and helped open the door for me when I came to photograph Araki and Shinoyama in 2009, for my series on photographers.
