Victor Gabriel Gilbert (French, 1847-1933) The flower market Oil on canvas 18-3/8 x 15-1/8 inches (46.7 x 38.4 cm) Signed lower left: Victor Gilbert PROVENANCE: Rehs Galleries, New York; Private collection, Dallas, acquired from the above, 2007. We are grateful to Noé Willer and Emilie Charmetant for confirming the authenticity of this work. Victor Gabriel Gilbert's artistic career was an inspiring success story shaped by personal determination, creative perseverance, and a measure of good fortune. Though his modest background prevented him from affording tuition at the École des Beaux-Arts—the traditional training ground for aspiring artists—his ambitions remained undeterred. At the age of thirteen, he apprenticed himself to the painter-decorator Eugène Adam and supplemented this practical experience with night classes at the École de la Ville de Paris, which comprised his only formal training. Early in his career, Gilbert identified the subject matter that would define his reputation: realistic depictions of modern Parisian life. Street vendors and markets became his primary focus, aligning his work with the progressive Realist movement in France, which rejected grand historical themes in favor of scenes drawn from contemporary life and informed by social realities. He drew many of his subjects from Les Halles, then a vibrant center of commerce and daily activity. Gilbert made his debut at the Salon of 1873, just one year before the first Impressionist exhibition at the photographer Nadar's studio. By the mid-1870s, his talent had attracted the attention of the dealer Père Martin, an early supporter of the Impressionists who championed emerging artists. Martin purchased several of Gilbert's works, commissioned a portrait, and actively promoted him, enabling Gilbert to abandon decorative work and devote himself fully to painting. While his earliest compositions often depict grittier subjects—fishmongers and market porters rendered in a darker palette—Gilbert also turned to more refined scenes. Works such as Marché aux Fleurs reflect a closer affinity with Impressionist painters, particularly Pierre-Auguste Renoir, in their shared interest in scenes of bourgeois leisure. With this shift in subject, Gilbert's palette likewise became lighter and more luminous. The variety of spring flowers on display in this market scene suggests a date in late April or May. The florist holds a bouquet of Parma violets, prized for their fragrance, large petals, and long stems. Cultivated in the south of France near Toulouse, these violets were among the most sought-after flowers of the nineteenth century. Surrounding them are other seasonal blooms, including lilacs, chrysanthemums, paperwhite narcissus, forget-me-nots, carnations, iris, peonies, cyclamen, marguerites, and stock. The specificity of these blooms suggests close study; Gilbert rendered identifiable varieties rather than generic flowers, reflecting his commitment to realism.
