Theresa Bernstein (American, 1890-2002) Stage Fort Park, circa 1930 Oil on canvas 27 x 35-3/4 inches (68.6 x 90.8 cm) Signed lower right: T Bernstein PROVENANCE: The artist; Acquired by present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: Joan Whalen Fine Art, New York, "Theresa Bernstein: A Seventy-Year Retrospective," February 25-April 18, 1998, no. 24; George Krevsky Gallery, San Francisco, California, "Theresa Bernstein: Discovering American Modernism," 2008. Theresa Bernstein summered in the Massachusetts coastal town of Gloucester for nearly seventy years. The nation's oldest seaport, Gloucester became a vibrant center for artists seeking respite from urban life in New York and Boston. Bernstein first visited in 1916 and was quickly captivated by its rich subject matter—from harbor scenes and seaside gatherings to parks, golf courses, fishermen, and the rugged shoreline. Her Gloucester paintings form a vital part of her oeuvre, evolving over decades of return visits to its rocky shores.
