George Rickey (1907-2002) Three Lines Up Bronze (Staggered), 1985 Bronze and stainless steel 38 x 27 x 3 inches (96.5 x 68.6 x 7.6 cm) Signed on base: Rickey 1985 PROVENANCE: Private collection, Dallas. NOTE: This sculpture is listed in the George Rickey Foundation database and will be included in the catalogue raisonné. George Rickey was one of the great pioneers of Kinetic Art, transforming the traditional idea of sculpture from a fixed object into something continually changing through movement. In Three Lines Up Bronze (Staggered) of 1985, three slender elements rise from a geometric bronze structure, responding to the slightest movement of air. Rickey described these linear forms as a kind of "drawing in space." Their apparent simplicity disguises remarkably precise engineering: balance, gravity, and chance work together as the lines continually change their relationship to one another and to the surrounding space. In this work, the contrast between the solid bronze base and the delicate moving lines is particularly effective, bringing stability and motion together in a single composition. Three Lines Up Bronze (Staggered) demonstrates what made Rickey's contribution to modern sculpture so important: rather than representing movement, he made movement itself part of the work of art.
