Vernon Fisher (American, 1943-2023) Untitled Mixed media on paper with excised text 60 x 60 inches (152.4 x 152.4 cm) (sheet) PROVENANCE: Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York; Acquired by present owner from the above, 1981. Born in Fort Worth and remaining closely connected to the city throughout his career, Vernon Fisher became one of the most internationally recognized artists to emerge from Texas. Beginning in the late 1970s, he developed a distinctive visual language combining painting, found imagery, diagrams, and fragments of text—elements that do not necessarily tell a single story but instead invite us to make our own connections. In this large-scale Untitled, the excised text is as important as the imagery, reflecting Fisher's fascination with language, memory, and the uncertain relationship between words and what we see. His participation in the 1981 and 2000 Whitney Biennials and inclusion in numerous major museum collections established his importance well beyond Texas. Described by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston as "the most prominent artist to bring a Postmodernist sensibility to Texas art," Fisher created a highly individual form of Conceptual painting that could be intellectual, humorous, and wonderfully puzzling at the same time.
