Trenton Doyle Hancock (American, b. 1974) Finally!, 2016 Mixed media on canvas 48 x 37-1/2 inches (121.9 x 95.2 cm) Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse: Trenton Doyle Hancock / "Finally!" / 2016 PROVENANCE: James Cohan Gallery, New York; Acquired by present owner from the above. Raised in Paris, Texas, and now based in Houston, Trenton Doyle Hancock has created one of the most distinctive imaginary worlds in contemporary American art. Combining painting, drawing, collage, language, comics, religion, and autobiography, Hancock developed an elaborate personal mythology populated by characters whose struggles allow him to explore larger questions of good and evil, identity, race, and human behavior. Finally! of 2016 brings together many of the qualities that make his work immediately recognizable: densely layered imagery, bold pattern, text, humor, and an underlying psychological complexity. Hancock achieved remarkable recognition early in his career, participating in both the 2000 and 2002 Whitney Biennials, and his work is now represented in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Finally! demonstrates how Hancock has transformed deeply personal experiences and Texas roots into a visual language that is entirely his own.
