Susie Rosmarin (American, b. 1950) Black #5 Acrylic on canvas 60 x 50 inches (152.4 x 127 cm) PROVENANCE: Angstrom Gallery, Dallas; Private collection, Dallas, acquired from the above, 1999. Houston-based artist Susie Rosmarin has developed one of the most distinctive approaches to geometric abstraction in contemporary Texas art. In Black #5, a carefully constructed grid of repeated lines and patterns creates an optical experience that seems to shift and vibrate before our eyes. Although her work is often associated with Op Art, Rosmarin's paintings are painstakingly made by hand and grow from mathematical systems as well as her fascination with light, color, and the patterns found in the world around us. The precision of Black #5 can initially appear almost machine-made, but its complexity is the result of a remarkably disciplined painting process. Rosmarin's importance was recognized with a major survey at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in 2016, while related works are held in museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
