Black Chalk drawing. With the estate stamp of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Lugt 1570 b) and the handwritten registration number “K Be / Bg 47” on the reverse. On laid paper (with the watermark "SLG"). 67.5 x 50.6 cm. , nearly the full sheet. [CH].
• A large, elaborate drawing from the artist’s sought-after Berlin period.
• With dynamic, expressive lines, Kirchner captures the figures’ movement on paper in an immediate and unadulterated manner.
• The female nude in the studio was among the artist’s main motifs at the time.
• It also appears in the painting “Three Bathers” (1913, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney) and the monumental triptych “Bathing Women” (1915/1925, Kirchner Museum, Davos, private collection, and National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.).
This work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive in Wichtrach/Bern.
From the artist’s estate, Davos (1938). Erna Schilling (1884-1945), Davos (the artist’s partner until 1945). Kunstmuseum Basel (on deposit since 1946, along with the remainder of the artist’s estate; with the manually numbered estate stamp on the reverse). Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett Roman Norbert Ketterer, Stuttgart (1954). Galerie Henze & Ketterer, Wichtrach/Bern. Galerie Utermann, Dortmund (acquired from the above in 2000). Acquired by the current owner from the above in 2001
Large drawing, in good condition. The margins show some creases, small folds, and very isolated tiny cracks, as well as a few small cracks that have been professionally repaired, primarily along the right edge of the sheet (up to approx. 2 cm). Isolated, small areas of paper thinning in the margins (visible against the light). Small white paint deposits at the lower edge of the image, presumably from the making. The condition report was compiled in daylight to the best of our knowledge and belief.
