Qin Feng (b. 1961) Desire Scenery 006 Ink, coffee, and tea on paper 78 x 48 inches (198.1 x 121.9 cm) (sheet) PROVENANCE: Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York; Private collection, New England, acquired from the above, 2015. Artist Qin Feng is the leading contemporary figure in Chinese ink painting. In Qin's Desire Scenery works, the artist—formally trained in oil painting, ink painting, and calligraphy at the Shandong Art Institute—reflects on the scenery in his life and the world around him rather than that of traditional Chinese landscape painting. On a large scale, Qin brings worlds together by blending the practices of ink painting with the expressive flair of gesture and abstraction. In this, he also utilizes tea, representing the East, and coffee, representing the West, to stain and overlap in the backgrounds of his works. Qin's childhood in Xinjiang, a region along the historic Silk Roads, together with his travels abroad, fostered a fascination with language and the calligraphic scripts of Chinese, Arabic, Uighur, and Hindi, while his journeys and experience of cultural revolution and an ever-changing landscape have deeply shaped his work.
