The German-Czech painter, draughtsman and printmaker Jiri Georg Dokoupil is regarded as one of the defining artistic figures of contemporary European art. In the wake of the Prague Spring, he emigrated with his family to Germany in 1968 and studied in Cologne, Frankfurt and at the Cooper Union in New York during the 1970s, where he was influenced by Hans Haacke. In the early 1980s, Dokoupil was among the protagonists of the Neue Wilde movement and a member of the Cologne-based artists’ group Mülheimer Freiheit. His work, however, consistently resists any fixed stylistic categorisation. Since the mid-1980s, he has developed experimental techniques and deliberately paints without brushes, employing unconventional materials such as soot, breast milk and soap suds. This openness establishes him as an independent position between Neo-Expressionism and postmodern painting, underscoring his continual artistic reinvention.
The present work belongs to Dokoupil’s characteristic soap-bubble paintings. The forms, seemingly suspended freely in space, are loosely distributed across the pictorial surface, creating a balanced tension between emptiness and density. Subtle overlaps enhance the spatial effect. The work exists between deliberate composition and chance occurrence — a central aspect of Dokoupil’s experimental practice
