John Held Jr. (American, 1889-1958) Farmer and Horse, proposed calendar art, circa 1940 Gouache on board 10-1/8 x 19-7/8 inches (25.7 x 50.5 cm) Signed center left: John Held Jr. This work was created as the April installment of a proposed calendar. Other examples from the project are featured in America's Great Illustrators by Susan E. Meyer (Galahad Books, 1978). The 1977 copyright notice on the verso appears to bein the hand of Walt Reed--the Illustration House represented the Held estate for many years.
