Cesare Auguste Detti (Italian, 1847-1914) Les fiançailles, 1895 Oil on canvas 25-3/4 x 22-3/8 inches (65.4 x 56.8 cm) Signed and dated lower right: C. Detti / 1895 Property from a Private Florida Collection PROVENANCE: V. Brandus; Private collection, acquired from the above, 1905; Thence by descent; Sotheby's, New York, January 31, 2014, lot 649, as The marriage of the prince; Acquired from the above. The artist Cesare Detti was celebrated for his highly detailed genre scenes that reflect a late nineteenth-century nostalgia for courtly life, drawing on the aristocratic culture and ceremony of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Trained at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and later active in Paris, Detti developed a polished style that appealed to an international audience. Les fiançailles offers a vibrant, romanticized moment in the lives of Francis II, future king of France, and Mary, Queen of Scots. Their engagement was arranged in 1548 as a political alliance between Scotland and France against England. Mary, then a young child, was sent to the French court, where she was raised alongside the dauphin. Their betrothal was formalized early, and they were married in 1558, when Mary was fifteen and Francis fourteen, briefly uniting the Scottish and French crowns when Francis ascended the throne the following year. Detti stages this celebration within an opulent architectural setting, where a group of nobles crowd to catch a glimpse of the royal couple. Francis's parents, Henri II and Catherine de' Medici, appear at the top of the stairs, presiding over the occasion, while the young couple descends along a richly woven carpet scattered with flowers. With Les fiançailles, as in all his finest work, Detti lingers over surfaces: costumes are elaborately detailed and saturated with light and color, matched by an equally vibrant decorative program of banners, stained glass, and painted walls. His ability to construct such scenes was grounded in close study. He assembled an extensive collection of period costumes and objets d'art—well documented in photographs of the artist himself in historical dress—which informed the convincing detail of his compositions. More than historical reconstruction, Detti's works like Les fiançailles emphasize the pleasures of spectacle, inviting the viewer to linger on the painted surface—observing lively conversations, catching the sheen of silks in the light, and joining in the pageantry. The success of Les fiançailles is further evidenced by its wide distribution as a print. It was also painted in 1895, the year Detti's hometown of Spoleto honored him with a medal engraved with his profile and a commemorative parchment that read: "To Cesare Detti, who in the capital of France, with art worthy of the finest brush, brings honor to the Italian homeland and adds to the fame of so distinguished a citizen, offered with unanimous applause" (translated from the Italian; Pasquale Laureti, "Vita Umbra, onoranze al pittore Cesare Detti," La vita italiana rivista illustrata, vol. III, 1895, p. 369). We wish to thank Craig Schermer for identifying the historical figures depicted in Detti's painting.
