Paul Jennewein: Sculptor, Tampa, Florida, 1980, p. 19, fig. 24, illustrated (another example). Carl Paul Jennewein's mythological bronzes draw upon classical sources to explore themes of beauty and idealized form. Rendered with exquisite sensitivity and a refined balance of naturalism and stylization, these qualities are particularly evident in the artist's Cupid and Psyche. The subject depicts the well-known myth from Apuleius' Metamorphoses, in which the mortal Psyche endures a series of trials to be reunited with Cupid, the god of love. In Jennewein's interpretation, Cupid appears as a youthful putto, gently perched upon Psyche's shoulders and offering a tender kiss to her tilted forehead. This treatment shifts the narrative away from its traditional emphasis on romantic love, instead imbuing the scene with a sense of intimacy and maternal warmth, as the childlike figure's affectionate gesture conveys a quieter, more nurturing bond. While the exact edition size of Jennewein's Cupid and Psyche is presently unknown, less than ten are believed to have been produced, and approximately five casts have been located in private collections. The present work is number four from this edition. HID12401132022 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
