Born in 1890 in present-day Poland, Theresa Bernstein was a skilled modernist celebrated for her dynamic depictions of New York and its diverse cultural life. She studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art and Design) before relocating to New York in 1912 to attend the Art Students League, where she trained under William Merritt Chase and went on to establish herself among the leading artists of the twentieth century. Bernstein's works are held in the permanent collections of numerous major institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
