Norman Rockwell (American, 1894-1978) Boy Scouts Pledging, 1971 Oil on canvas 13 x 12 inches (33.0 x 30.5 cm) Signed lower right: Norman / Rockwell Property from the BSA Settlement Trust, Sold for the Benefit of Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse LITERATURE: Boys' Life Magazine: 60th Anniversary Issue, The Boy Scouts of America, New York, March 1971, cover; M. Moline, Norman Rockwell Encyclopedia, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1979, p. 15, fig. 1-10, illustrated (as 60th Anniversary). A preliminary study for the present work is recorded in the Norman Rockwell Art Collection Trust, accession number NRACT.1976.45. That preliminary sketch is rendered in a vibrant crimson color, as was typical of the artist's process. This crimson underpainting was believed to enliven the blues, greens, and neutrals of his compositions and to impart warmth to flesh tones. The present work employs the same process, as is seen in the extreme outer margins of the painted image, where bright crimson from the underpaint can be seen below the final composition.
