Mario Giacomelli (Italian, 1925-2000) Verra La Morta, 1955 Gelatin silver print, printed 1987 11-1/2 x 15-1/4 inches (29.2 x 38.7 cm) (image/sheet) Signed in ink in the image. Signed and dated in ink, and with title and photographer's stamp, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, circa 1989. In early 1989, after nearly a week photographing Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza and his fifth wife, Tita, in Lugano, Switzerland, my assistant, Andy French, and I traveled to Senigallia, Italy, to photograph the remarkable Mario Giacomelli. We spent three very full days with him while a French photo historian visited him, and shared lots of stories about photographers and especially about Mario, who allowed us to make portraits of him during this period. He was running a small print shop in town that did wedding announcements and cards for the community, and his real passion was his photographic pursuits. This image "Verra La Morta" (Death Will Come) is from a series he made in a retirement home in his town in 1955. He was kindly able to sell me a number of his master prints for the "collegial" prices, which were even affordable to me, and allowed me to acquire maybe 7 or 8 of his great images.
