Hari (Harry) Matthew Kidd (American, 1899-1964) Moonlight Oil on canvas 30 x 20 inches (76.2 x 50.8 cm) Signed and inscribed lower right: For EC / Harry Kidd Property from the collection of John L. Nau, III, Houston PROVENANCE: David Dike, Dallas; Acquired by the present owner from the above. While not a native Texan, Hari Kidd attended school in El Paso and is considered one of the artists who introduced early twentieth century Modernism to West Texas. After serving in World War I, Kidd attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, winning a scholarship that allowed him to study in Europe. While Kidd participated in several exhibits across the United States, he would have his first solo exhibit in 1940 which travelled throughout the Southwest. Hari Kidd's work exemplifies modernist and abstraction techniques, while speaking to the tumultuous and negative aspects of war as well as provoking social consciousness from the viewer.
