Ernest Knee (American, 1907-1982) Howard Hughes and His "Spruce Goose", Long Beach, California, c. 1947 (4 works) 4 gelatin silver contact prints, mounted together on modern archival board. Each 4 x 5 inches (10.2 x 12.7 cm) (image/sheet) 16 x 20 inches (mount) The "Spruce Goose", also known as Howard Hughes's "Flying Boat", was the largest plane ever built, with a wingspan of 320 feet, vertical tail height of 49 1/2 feet, length over 218 feet, weight over 400,000 pounds. This gargantuan machine was powered by 8 Pratt & Whitney , 300 horsepower, radian reciprocating engines with 8 4-bladed propellers, each 17 feet in length. The plane only flew once, on November 11, 1947 and is now on display at Evergreen Aviation Museum in Oregon.
